Friends of KatKids in NYC

On September 27th, 2007, Mr. Sundaram Tagore allowed ‘Friends of The Kathmandu Kids Club’ to use his amazing Sundaram Tagore Art Gallery, in Chelsea New York, to hold a ‘Nepal Night’ with a silent and live auction, to try to increase awareness for the children in serious need in Kathmandu. The team, Ruth Kempe, Maria Higgins, Debbie Taylor, Mollie Meyer, Ben Pewter, Nick Pewter and Alicia Wanklyn flew to New York to make the Event happen.

The idea was the brainchild of the Marketing Team: Nila Davda, Rao Vemuganti, Susan Pateras, Melissa Moore, Paula Wight and Ruth Kempe. All these individuals raised funds in Bermuda – just over $3,000.00 was raised – and the money was then taken to Kathmandu, by Ruth, to make purchases for the auction. While in Kathmandu Ruth also met kids in four of the ISIS homes. With guidance from ISIS staff, many rugs, pashminas, and objects such as Buddhas, thanka paintings, prayer wheels and jewellery were purchased. Scarves, handmade by women from the Women’s Foundation (one of the ISIS partner organisations) were also purchased, thereby also providing financial support for the Women’s Foundation and the women and children the foundation supports. The purchases were then flown to New York City for the event. Many wonderful people helped, not only with the donations, but also providing the venue for the Event, assisting with receiving and storing the goods in NYC, graphic work for the Auction catalogue, printing leaflets to provide information about the Club, sponsoring the cost of flying the Kathmandu goods to New York City etc, and in particular invaluable time. The evening was absolutely wonderful and attended by about 70 people. A cheque for $12,500 was presented to The ISIS Foundation for their worthy projects in Kathmandu.

Ruth Kempe’s Birthday Party, Bermuda

A couple of years ago Ruth decided to have a 49- and holding party and it has become an annual event. Each year it has a special theme (2005 was a Pink Thai Night, 2006 was a White Party!). Any guest invited was expected to dress entirely in white; there were white drinks, white canopies , white candles, white everything! One room was turned into a dance floor and “The March of the Penguins” was projected against a back wall and ceiling! And in lieu of gifts Ruth requested donations to KatKids.

The food was provided free of charge by local Nepalis, as was the cooking. More than 100 people partied the night away, learning Nepali dancing and enjoying the feast.Lisa and Rajesh are now helping out even further by encouraging people in the UK to become members, and they are even considering abseiling down a 200-foot building for the Katkids Club!Click here for photos of the event

Kyla Bolden’s 10th Birthday Party, Bermuda

Inspired by an Oprah Winfrey programme on television, nine year old Kyla Bolden decided that this year she did not want any birthday presents for her 10th birthday. Instead she decided to hold a birthday party and asked her friends to bring donations for charity, not presents for the birthday girl. Her parents, David and Antoinette Bolden, said that Kyla made the decision all by herself.“She is very sensitive to the fact that there a millions of people in the world who are in severe need and she wanted to do something about it,” explained her mother. “When people arrived for the party they were very generous, giving $50, sometimes $100.”In total, Kyla’s generous thought raised a grand total of $1,500. Having read an article which appeared in The Royal Gazette on 2 May, about a new charity initiative launched that week called the Kathmandu Kids Club, Kyla decided to find out more. She examined their web site and asked her parents about the organisation and their parent charity, The ISIS Foundation. Having satisfied herself with the answers, she decided to give $1,000 to the Kathmandu Kids Club and $500 to PALS.Click here for photos of Kyla presenting the Birthday Party cheque
